Zwischenraum 61

‍

Since June 2026, Berlin Mondiale has been active in Gräfekiez, in Berlin’s Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district. With Zwischenraum 61, we are establishing a new local hub that connects people, places and perspectives through art and culture. We work #MobilImKiez, moving between Zickenplatz, Düttmann-Siedlung and Hasenheide. Along the way, we build connections with the people and initiatives that shape everyday life in the neighbourhood. Urbanstraße runs through Gräfekiez, separating its northern and southern parts.
‍

Our initial research and conversations with people in the neighbourhood suggest that this division can also shape everyday life and how people experience different parts of the Kiez. This raises a question that guides our work: How can art create spaces where people connect across these boundaries, exchange perspectives and experience Gräfekiez as a shared living space?

Together with local initiatives, artists and neighbourhood residents, we develop artistic formats that invite people to participate and explore new ways of coming together. These include a Poetry Lab for young people in collaboration with Street College, a block party and light-design workshops. During the light-design workshops, participants create their own light objects, which will be used in a walk through the streets of Gräfekiez.

Zwischenraum 61 grows through these encounters. Our work draws on artistic perspectives, experiences from other Berlin Mondiale hubs and the knowledge of local partners. At the same time, we leave room for new ideas and developments. Rather than prescribing a fixed programme, we want to shape activities together with the neighbourhood and respond to the interests, experiences and needs of people living in Gräfekiez.
